The Compact Lying Press is a small lying press with a capacity of 14
inches between the screws. It is sold separately or with a bench top
tub which doubles as a storage box. It is of very sturdy construction
and made of Hard Maple. The jaws are 3-5/8" square by 23 inches in
length. The screws are 1-5/8" diameter with a pitch of three threads
per inch. The handles of the screws are 2-3/4" in diameter and are
bored for use with a wooden lever (included). One of the jaws is
grooved for use with a plow. The tub is designed so that the press can
be stood up vertically as well.
I have tried to improve on the traditional design. The guide bars which serve to align the two jaws of the press are let into the ends of the press instead of being fitted into square mortises. This allows a closer fit to be made so that the jaws stay in close alignment even under strong pressure. The guide bars are securely fastened with steel screws tapped into brass cylinders. (See illustration) Each wooden screw is equipped with a pair of lexan washers which reduce friction with the jaw of the press and also prevent the flange of the screw from wearing on the side of the press jaw. A PLOW for this press is available. |
